The theme of the day was Global Partnership, the 8th of the Millennium Development Goals, which have received more publicity in the last few months in the national and international press. Women came from the north (Edinburgh), south (London), East (Ipswich) and West (Llandudno) & all points in between! Kathleen Pearson introduced the theme of the day and we listened to Eliza Doolittle’s song about “Words, Words, Words”, reminding us that putting our words into action should be a priority. We then heard about partnerships with organizations in other countries that different districts have been involved with, including work in Sierra Leone to improve adult literacy, the ongoing work of CLEM in Bolivia which is extending a health centre (by raising the roof literally) to provide a refuge for women affected by domestic abuse, and the consultative status of WFMUCW with the United Nations. We had a quick tour through some of the resources produced by the unit to help us implement the MDGs; new posters are available on the website HYPERLINK "http://www.wfedmeth.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk" www.wfedmeth.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk We also thought about how our involvement with people overseas needs to embody the best practice of partnership. People are people, not projects. After lunch we divided into smaller groups to hear in more detail about other partnerships. Our passion for action was ignited by a great contextual Bible study by Jenny Pathmarajah, which inspired discussion about the moral tightrope of ethical shopping, fair-trade products, our carbon footprint and affordability. Janice Clark encouraged us to get involved with Habitat for Humanity, either by considering taking part in a team build, volunteering as an individual or supporting the charity financially. Giving people a hand up rather than a hand out, to live in affordable housing that they have helped build alongside volunteers, benefits the homeowner and can be a life changing experience for those who volunteer. I’ve been on several builds now myself and would certainly agree with that. There has been some discussion about a British Unit build so if anyone is interested in this please contact Janice Clark initially for more information or look at the website HYPERLINK "http://www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk/" http://www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk/. How much do you know about MRDF’s work? We were quizzed on our knowledge and then learnt more about the work that continues in places where other NGOs are no longer involved, reaching out to some of the most marginalized people and communities. You may learn more about some of this work if your church is utilizing the Harvest Pack resource from MRDF. I certainly hadn’t realized that parts of Ethiopia are very cold and mountainous, and that eucalyptus can be used as a crop. Finally we came back together to participate in worship led by Judith Simms, the connexional Network President, reminding us again that faith in action is important. Some of the speakers at this day will be taking part in the Area Seminar in May 2009, at Erskine Bridge Hotel, which I think will be very worthwhile attending judging by the contributions made at Stoke on Trent. Although I didn’t manage my brain training challenge by counting the words spoken on the day, I hope that all of us can take up the other challenge of putting our words into action.
